Anthriscus cerefolium 'Massa (Brussels Winter)'
Hardy culinary chervil with delicate aniseed flavour and excellent cold tolerance

Anthriscus cerefolium 'Massa (Brussels Winter)' is a premium chervil selection valued for its finely divided, aromatic foliage with a delicate aniseed flavour. This traditional European strain is slower to bolt than standard chervil and offers excellent cold tolerance, making it particularly well suited to extended harvesting and winter production.

Unlike many culinary herbs, chervil thrives in cool conditions and performs best in partial shade, where its tender leaves remain soft and full of flavour. Ideal for kitchen gardens, raised beds and containers, regular succession sowings provide a continuous harvest from spring through autumn, while autumn sowings can supply fresh leaves throughout winter in favourable conditions.

Expert Growing Tips

● Direct sow where plants are to grow, as chervil develops a slender taproot and does not transplant reliably.

● Sow every 3–4 weeks for a continuous supply of fresh leaves.

● Grow in partial shade during summer to delay bolting and maintain the best leaf quality.

● This 'Massa (Brussels Winter)' selection is well suited to autumn sowing and can provide fresh leaves through winter with light protection.

● Harvest leaves regularly before flowering, as young foliage has the finest flavour.
