Alyssum montanum 'Mountain Gold'
Hardy evergreen perennial with masses of golden-yellow spring flowers

Alyssum montanum 'Mountain Gold', also known as Mountain Alyssum, is a compact, low-growing hardy perennial forming spreading cushions of attractive grey-green evergreen foliage covered with masses of bright golden-yellow flowers. Its naturally neat, ground-hugging habit makes it particularly valuable where a colourful perennial is needed without adding height.

Flowering mainly from spring into early summer, 'Mountain Gold' creates an impressive carpet of colour in rock gardens, gravel gardens, walls, edging and other dry, sunny positions. Once established, it thrives in lean, well-drained soil and tolerates dry conditions particularly well, while its flowers provide an early-season food source for bees and other pollinating insects. RHS recognises 'Mountain Gold' as a synonym of 'Berggold' and describes it as an evergreen, prostrate perennial reaching around 15 cm.

Expert Growing Tips

● Surface sow the small seeds and gently press them onto the compost to ensure good contact while maintaining exposure to light, which aids germination.

● Avoid keeping established plants in rich, wet soil. 'Mountain Gold' naturally performs best in lean, sharply drained conditions and is particularly well suited to rock and gravel gardens.

● Choose a sunny planting position for the densest growth and strongest spring flower display.

● Good drainage is particularly important during winter; avoid positions where water remains around the crown for prolonged periods.

● Lightly trim plants after flowering if necessary to maintain their compact, cushion-forming shape and keep the evergreen foliage neat.
