Ocimum basilicum 'Red Rubin'
Rich dark purple aromatic foliage with a warm, spicy basil flavour

Ocimum basilicum 'Red Rubin' is a striking purple-leaved basil combining excellent culinary flavour with outstanding ornamental colour. It produces broad, smooth leaves in rich shades of deep burgundy, purple-red and dark purple, held on contrasting purple stems. The aromatic foliage has a warm, spicy basil flavour and makes a colourful alternative to traditional green sweet basil.

Growing into an upright, bushy plant approximately 45–60 cm tall, Red Rubin is equally attractive in herb gardens, vegetable plots and patio containers. Its colourful leaves are excellent for salads, pasta dishes, garnishes, flavoured oils and vinegars, while regular harvesting encourages fresh, tender growth throughout summer.

Expert Growing Tips

● Sow the seeds shallowly and maintain consistent warmth to encourage even germination.

● Wait until all risk of frost has passed before planting outdoors, as basil is particularly sensitive to cold.

● Choose a warm, sunny position to encourage strong growth and rich purple foliage colour.

● Harvest the growing tips regularly to encourage bushier plants and a steady supply of tender leaves.

● Pinch out developing flower spikes if growing primarily for leaves to help prolong the productive harvesting period.
